About

Hamish Pringle 'Ur-Rhizome' 2020. Used Mirka HiolitXO P80 sandpaper belts with white lett

My enthusiam for art stems from childhood and it's been a lifelong activity.

So when I retired from advertising in 2017 I took the opportunity to embark on a second career as an artist.

From 2018 to 2020 I studied for a Masters in Fine Arts at Wimbledon Colllege of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London, and graduated with Distinction.

In 2018 I joined Artists At Home (AAH), in West London and I have exhibited with them at my 'Open Studio' each year since.

In 2021 I joined the AAH Steering Group with responsibility for membership and finance.

As an artist I've taken a sabbatical from Open Studios in 2025, but continue in my behind the scenes roles for AAH.

Approach

As an artist, I’m exploring attrition in nature, society, relationships, and language.

Attrition occurs at junctions where the organic collides with the inorganic; as people meet in love or war; and when words are changed by usage and reinvention.

I use a wide variety of materials to express my ideas. Having said that, sandpaper is a key medium with its abrasive function, the duality of its rough and smooth sides, and its potential to symbolise attriton in multiple ways.

I talk about these ideas in the video above.
